What you need to know in Unit 7.1...

7.1.1 Reasons for variations in global urban growth rates.

7.1.2 Causes of rapid urban growth in LICs: rural to urban migration, social, economic, environmental, and
political factors, natural increase

7.1.1 Reasons for variations in global urban growth rates.
This unit explores why urban growth rates vary around the world. Some countries experience rapid urban growth, while others see much slower growth or even decline. You will examine how factors such as natural increase, migration, economic development, government policies and the stage of urbanisation influence these differences. By understanding these reasons, you will be able to explain why cities grow at different speeds in different parts of the world.

Starter: Watch the short video above to upskill your understanding of why settlements developed, and which factors have led to rapid urbanisation in recent human history.

Urban Growth - What's going on?

More than 4 billion people – more than half of the world – live in urban areas.

For most of human history, most people across the world lived in small communities. Over the past few centuries – and particularly in recent decades – this has shifted dramatically. There has been a mass migration of populations from rural to urban areas.

Task 1 - Data Task - Complete the worksheet below. To gain actual data from particular years, please hover over the charts above and below to reveal that information.
Task 1 - Data TAsk - plotting urban growth over time around the world

Task 2 - What is causing the variations in growth in urban areas?

Complete the activities on the worksheet below. You can work in pairs to discuss the factors and carry out additional research to help you to fill in the table.

You can watch the video from the Economist below to get you started.
Task 2 - variations in growth in urban areas worksheet

7.1.2 Causes of rapid urban growth in LICs

This unit explores the causes of rapid urban growth in Low Income Countries (LICs). In many parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, cities are growing very quickly as more people move to urban areas and populations increase naturally. You will investigate the push and pull factors behind rural to urban migration, as well as the role of high birth rates, job opportunities, environmental pressures and political issues. By the end of the unit, you will understand why cities in LICs are expanding so rapidly and the impacts this growth can have.

Task 3
- Watch the video below and complete the activity on the worksheet below
Task 3 - video note taking worksheet

Task 4 - Check out the infographic generated by Notebook LM below. It shows the main reasons for urban growth in LICs.  Answer the questions below on a blank Word doc / OneNote etc.

Source Analysis Questions: Causes of Rapid Urban Growth in LICs

i. Using the infographic, explain two push factors that encourage people to leave rural areas in LICs.

ii. What pull factors shown in the infographic attract migrants to cities? Give two examples and explain how they encourage migration.

iii. Using the infographic, explain how high birth rates and falling death rates increase the population of cities in LICs.

iv. The infographic shows that economic concentration creates labour demand. Explain how this links to rural to urban migration.

v. Which factor shown in the infographic do you think is most important in causing rapid urban growth in LICs? Justify your answer using evidence from the source.

Task 5
- Finally, we need to study the factors that influence growth of rural to urban migration in LICs. Use the worksheet below to complete this activity.
Task 5 - factors affecting rural to urban migration in LICS

Revision

Below you will find a short podcast for revision purposes that sums up this short IGCSE Geography unit of work. It is a good idea to use this to start your revision process before your mock and real examinations.
