The River Nile is the longest river in Africa and has provided opportunities for people for thousands of years. Its water supports farming in the dry deserts of Egypt and Sudan, while also providing drinking water, transport routes and hydroelectric power. The fertile land created by the Nile has allowed settlements, towns and cities to develop along its banks, making it one of the world's most important rivers.

Flooding - Causes, Impacts & Management (Baregès - France 2013).
Flooding is one of the most common and destructive natural hazards affecting river environments. It occurs when a river cannot contain all of its water and overflows onto the surrounding land. In June 2013, the River Bastan burst its banks after intense rainfall and rapid snowmelt, causing severe flooding in the mountain village of Baregès in the French Pyrenees. In this section, you will investigate the causes and impacts of this flood and evaluate the different strategies, including sustainable approaches, that have been used to reduce the risk of future flooding.

Flooding only becomes a hazard when it affects people, property or infrastructure. A river overflowing onto its natural floodplain is a normal process. However, when homes, businesses or transport routes are built on the floodplain, flooding can cause significant damage and disruption. Flood risk has increased in many parts of the world for two main human reasons: 1. Urbanisation – Roads, car parks and buildings are covered with concrete and tarmac. These impermeable surfaces prevent infiltration, increasing surface runoff and causing rivers to rise more quickly after heavy rainfall. 2. Building on floodplains – More homes, businesses and infrastructure are being built on land that naturally floods. As a result, more people and property are at risk when rivers burst their banks.
